To me, a theme is an underlying mood or atmosphere that helps the gymnasts understand and engage more deeply. They need to know what kind of energy the movements should be performed with—and a theme can help make that clear. Sometimes it’s just in certain parts of the routine, and other times the entire routine is based on one theme.

For the senior women’s national team routine I choreographed for the 2024 European Championships, the overarching theme was that we are all different—and that it’s okay to be exactly who we are. That’s why there were several moments in the routine where this diversity was meant to be visible.
For example, the canon section before the balance element was meant to symbolize how we as humans sometimes follow others without really checking in with ourselves to see if it’s what we want. It could be fashion trends, beauty trends, or going to a party just because we’re afraid of missing out.
The beginning of the routine symbolized that although we are different—since the gymnasts were performing different movements—we are also the same. That’s something we sometimes forget when we’re in a conflict or in a situation where it feels easier to focus on differences rather than what we actually share.
Just before the group element, there’s a section where the gymnasts again perform different and similar movements in turns. That section was made up of movements the gymnasts created themselves—so it came from within them.
Our differences are also what make us exactly who we are. You are enough, no matter who you are or what you look like.
There are more examples of this throughout the routine, but I’ll leave it to you to discover them.

I also use a theme to help gymnasts express themselves through performance. Music plays a huge role here. With dark, moody music, it doesn’t make sense to smile—and with happy, upbeat music, it doesn’t make sense to look serious or upset.

I don’t always have an overarching theme; it depends on where the music takes me. What kind of images come to mind when I listen to the music—and can I connect those into a cohesive theme?

The routine I created for the senior women’s national team for the 2022 European Championships was inspired by the COVID lockdown period. Being isolated at home, left alone with your thoughts, while one event after another got canceled. “Together, apart.”
From April onward, we trained outdoors, and afterward in groups of 10. When we were finally allowed to train together normally again, nothing really felt normal. Time stood still—and yet it raced by—because we had been looking forward to events that never happened.
Yes, it was a wild period, and it found its way into the routine. Try to see if you can spot parts of the routine where those feelings are expressed.

A theme doesn’t have to run through the entire routine—it can also just be a small section where you want the gymnasts to express something specific.
A rhythmic sequence that should feel aggressive, a routine opening that should be graceful and elegant, or an ending that needs to be intense and powerful. As long as it makes sense to you, your gymnasts, and the music.

For many years, I avoided calling it a “theme” when I explained to gymnasts the kind of image I wanted them to think of during a movement. I didn’t want to impose a theme across an entire routine if it wouldn’t be consistent throughout. That way, there’s more freedom to let the body move naturally with the music, without being forced into a narrative.
I’m not a strong advocate for one method over the other. I see strengths in both kinds of routines, and I use both approaches myself. It all depends on the music—and what it tells me.

Do you use a theme in your routines?

In what way do you incorporate themes?

I use a story or a theme to help the gymnasts create the right images in their minds for certain movements.
