I also include a few buffer sessions in the plan because unexpected things always happen during the season, such as illness or canceled practices. It’s a good idea to start the season by teaching the most difficult sections of the routine, so the gymnasts have more time to learn the movements.

Younger gymnasts often struggle with transitions across the floor. The benefit of teaching these sections early is that they can also be incorporated into the warm-up of every practice of the week, not just the floor training.

Training/Month

Routine Section

Elements and Requirements

august

Part 1: RS (the rhythmic sequence) + 2×8 counts – the start of the routine

Flexibility element

august

Repetition of what was learned previously

august

Part 2: The start of the routine + backward movements (leading into large formation)

Standing balance + handstand/headstand

september

Repetition + testing the start of the routine in formation

september

Part 3: Movements in large formation + DS (sequence with an element)

Standing twist jump + hop on one leg

september

Repetition + testing the routine in formations transitioning into large formation

Curved formation

september

Part 4: From large formation + sideways movements

Large formation

september

Repetition + testing routine in continued formations

oktober

Part 5: Group element, etc.

Small formation + G + jump

oktober

Part 6: Acrobatic element section

1-2x acrobatic element

oktober

Repetition + test the routine with formations

november

Part 7: Routine ending (4×8 counts)

Planche

november

Run the full routine several times

In the above example, I divided the routine into seven parts. This varies from season to season depending on what makes sense for the specific team. Sometimes, it also depends on the music used in the routine—meaning the music may dictate how many parts the routine is broken into. Of course, it also depends on whether the routine is for a U11 team (time requirement: 1:00–1:30) or a Senior mens team (time requirement: 2:15–2:45).

I really like testing the routine in formations during the learning process. The benefit of this approach is that you quickly see whether a transition fits and flows into the next formation. This gives me the opportunity to adjust transitions early, which is better for the gymnasts. Sometimes, I realize the gymnasts move more in one direction than expected when doing the movements—this shifts the starting point for the next formation, and I need to account for that. That’s why I test formations early on—even before team divisions are made (if you’re working with gymnasts for more than one team). I simply assign random spots, like telling them to “pair up,” and give those pairs double spots if the group will be split into two teams. Once the teams are finalized, they get their actual spots—the ones they will use for the first competition. Another way is to pair one of the oldest with one of the youngest, combining an “experienced” gymnast with a “newcomer.” There are many ways to do it—you know your gymnasts best.

It makes the most sense to test in lineups along the way for teams participating in the Danmarksserien and the League, because the requirement for the number of lineups is 6 and 8. In the Regionsrækken and Aspirant divisions, the requirement is only 3 and 2 lineups.

It always takes longer to teach gymnasts their positions and formations than you think—so start early in the season. I find it important to allocate enough time in each session to work on formations. The gymnasts need to feel secure in the process, and there should be no pressure or stress during training.

I wasn’t always this organized in my planning, but I’ve learned it over the years. Especially when working with other floor coaches, it’s essential to have a plan to avoid misunderstandings. As long as you have a plan, it’s easy to adjust if something else makes more sense during a specific training. I still love being spontaneous, and that sometimes happens when something unexpectedly sparks the gymnasts’ (or my own) interest. In those moments, it’s better to go with the flow rather than kill their motivation by sticking strictly to the plan. Of course, this doesn’t apply to the sessions right before a competition, but for repetition training, I’m happy to make adjustments.

I really like teaching routines in chronological order—except for the transitions, like RS and DS. I usually teach those parts as early as possible. Once the full routine is learned with formations and the gymnasts have completed their first competition, I critically evaluate each section: Do the movements fit together, and is there a good flow? I don’t change the routine just because I can—there needs to be a clear reason for it, and any change must improve the routine.
It takes time before the gymnasts fully master the routine, and patience is key. Don’t make changes just because they don’t grasp something right away. Give them time to absorb the movements and transitions.

Finally, I ask myself: What did the judges say about the routine, and what do I want to work on next? I then include that feedback in my planning for the next phase.

Before the season begins, I create a plan for which parts of the routine the gymnasts should learn at each training session.
