For example, if the skill is a standing tucked 540 jump, the progression might begin with a tucked 360 jump at the start of the season, gradually working toward the tucked 540 jump by the end of the season or the following year. To avoid overloading the gymnasts or causing mental fatigue, I divide the season into distinct phases. Exercises for each skill evolve over time depending on the gymnasts’ mastery.

Phase 1: Focus on drills related to strength, flexibility, and coordination. Low load, high repetition.

Phase 2: Continue with drills and start introducing the full skill on softer surfaces (if appropriate). Moderate to high load with moderate repetitions. Only a few full-skill reps before the first competition.

Phase 3: Emphasis on the full skill. High load, few repetitions. Include key drills during warm-up. This is the competition phase.

Some skills, like handstands, can be practiced on the floor throughout the season—but it’s important to avoid wrist overuse. A good idea is to also train the extended body position without weight on the hands to build body tension. A split jump/leap with twist is a skill that requires the gymnast to be thoroughly warmed up to perform correctly. It can be tough on the body, so I recommend strengthening the groin and hip flexors to prevent injuries.

The take-off for a backward salto also places a high load on the body. To reduce stress, it’s best to limit repetitions on the hard floor and instead train the skill on softer surfaces during the learning and repetition phases. High-load skills should be trained with fewer reps per session compared to low-load skills.

Many elements that score between 0.2 and 0.6 points can be practiced frequently throughout the season due to their relatively low physical demand. What I emphasize with these skills is that gymnasts train them on both sides. For instance, pirouettes and standing balances should be practiced on both legs during warm-ups to promote overall symmetry and all-around ability.

The first half of the season is when the foundation is built to learn and eventually perform the skill in spring competitions. Phase 1 is the longest of the three and focuses on many different aspects of the skill. The duration also depends on the complexity—whether it’s a full-turn split leap or an Ajax jump.

After each competition, high-load elements are practiced on softer surfaces or only in part to allow the body to recover, as competitions always leave some wear on the gymnasts.

Throughout the season, I set sub-goals for each skill so I can track if the team is on the right path. Whether I check progress monthly or less frequently depends on the skill and the athletes involved.

Progress must be measurable—for both the gymnasts and the coaches. When our senior men’s team started working on splits, we measured how far each gymnast was from the floor with a tape measure at every floor training. The data was recorded, for both legs, so flexibility was developed symmetrically. The same approach was taken for standing balances—we measured the vertical distance from the floor to the lifted foot. This made it easy to track improvement and adjust strength or flexibility exercises when needed.

However, I don’t recommend this level of tracking for children. Weekly measurements can shift focus to performance rather than development, and young gymnasts may feel pressure to perform at every session. For senior athletes, this approach can be motivating—but for younger ones, it’s best used a few times per year.

I never put a gymnast in a competition with a skill they can’t confidently perform in training. It creates insecurity and frustration, and the team won’t receive credit for the element. Occasionally, it makes sense to test a skill in competition to see how judges score it—but generally, I ensure all gymnasts can reliably perform the skill before it’s added to the routine.
Even if a skill doesn’t make it into the competition, the training is never wasted. After the summer break, the gymnasts return stronger with that foundation already built. As coaches, it’s our responsibility to continually push our gymnasts in the right direction and challenge them to grow. Sometimes that growth is short-term, and other times it spans several seasons.

The most important thing is that gymnasts enter the floor with confidence—knowing they can all perform the skill—and that we, as coaches, have made the right choices when it comes to skill selection.

Each season, I create a plan outlining how my gymnasts will progress toward performing the most difficult version of a skill by the final competition.
